Feature and News:

Length requirements are 1:30 to 2:30.
You may go over the 2:30 mark but your video must hold your viewers attention in a compelling way. Otherwise, you will lose points.

Each are worth 200 points.

Directions:

  1. Research your stories appropriately.
  2. Choose strong characters.
  3. Plan your videos thoroughly.
  4. Include conflict and resolution.
  5. Make sure your story idea will provide you with compelling visuals.
  6. Shoot and edit to grab your audience within the first ten seconds.
  7. Shoot details, medium shots and scene setters.
  8. SHOOT LOTS OF VARIETY.
  9. Remember: Shoot. Move. Shoot. Move. Anticipate action and reaction.
  10. Longer videos that should be shorter, will hurt your grade.
  11. Interview one or more subjects. Vary your subject to camera distance. Consider using two cameras.
  12. You MUST use the tripod to shoot the interview. Remember to use manual focus for the interview. Use an appropriate mic.
  13. Make sure you have visuals that compliment the audio.
  14. Use Adobe Premiere to edit.
  15. Log your footage.
  16. Cut your audio first. Remember, audio drives your story.
  17. Use title slides, credits and place in lower thirds where appropriate.
  18. Use voice-over in at least one of your 4 videos. Use it to advance the story.
  19. The interview should not dominate the piece.
  20. Weave audio/video (B-Roll) into your piece without the interview.
  21. Use cutaways to avoid jump cuts and to show us a visual narrative.
  22. Shoot lots of b-roll especially details.
  23. Your stories must show an obvious beginning, middle and end.
  24. If you use music it must be neutral. In other words it should not alter the emotional message of the story. It must not be commercial. Resources: Bensound.com and https://mobygratis.com/.
