  • NPPA Code of Ethics
  • Balance right to privacy with news worthiness:
    • Covering a triple murder
    • Quietly outside police tape
    • Reporter runs next to a traumatized family member to get her story
    • Act with compassion and sensitivity
    • Would shooting video add to subject’s trauma?
  • Staging journalistic and news video:
If you tell someone what to do or how to act, how is that journalism? The idea of journalism is to report what is happening, not to create scenarios for consumption that fit your bias or to create imagery because you think what you have is not strong enough. DO NOT stage anything unless it is incredibly obvious. This is in the same vein as our ethics for making a posed portrait.
  • Selective editing to support a point of view:
Edit video with the story in mind. What is the story? Am I making changes that do not support the reality of the story? The reality of what was happening?
  • Do not Asking leading questions
  • Electronically altered video is alarming and goes against our Code of Ethics:
    • Expert: Acosta video distributed by White House was doctored – Associated Press
    • Seattle TV station FIRES editor after video emerges showing orange-toned Trump with his tongue hanging out while delivering Oval Office address-The Daily Mail
    • Faked Pelosi videos, slowed to make her appear drunk, spread across social media – The Washington Post
